So Matt, Mike and I took a little adventure across to Mexico over the weekend and attended the Werribee Heli Fun Fly/Hirobo Cup held on the outskirts of Melbourne. The event was set to attract a large group of entrants and had a major drawcard with 2009 3D Masters Champion Dominik Haegele attending. Unfortunately it appeared we followed the last of the good weather into Melbourne on Friday afternoon. We probably should have taken the “puddles” on the field as an ominous sign of what was to come.
Matt managed to get some flying in late on Friday afternoon and a few flights in early on Saturday then a very nasty storm pattern moved in bringing several inches of rain over 24-hours and turning the field into a lake. OMP released the new JR 50nex and the Mini Protos at the event and both had a lot of interest. We were the only supplier to release a new product at the event (besides Haegeles new brand of rotor blades being resold by Perth RC). Unfortunately the inclement conditions meant that most people were forced to leave the field mid-afternoon on Saturday. We returned Sunday to find “Lake Werribee” and some strong winds of 30kmh+. The event was virtually called off with some dedicated pilots moving on to a local club at Keilor to watch a demonstration from Haegele and Dargue.
Despite the weather it was a great event to attend and meet some new faces. We look forward to the Coffs Harbour event early next year, and the SA Heli Fun Fly in February (?).
